Writing Kaupeka’s Purerehua's

For writing this week we had to wright an article about something in your community I wrote about Kaupeka’s Purerehua's and interviewed my friend about them. Here is what I wrote.

                                                      Kaupeka’s Purerehua's

This term in Kaupeka we have been trying to get a better understanding of our Tūrangawaewae. So we have created Purerehua. The word Purerehua is Maori for butterfly, it is called this because when you spin it around it sounds like a big butterfly flapping its wings. Maori used to use the Purerehua not only to make a sound but also to call the rains to wet their crops, and to bring lizards out of hiding. Our Purerehua has to have meaning to it, so most of them have Maori designs, or you mountain or your river. Mine has all of them. It has got Mangopare which symbolizes natural abundance, strength and determination. Amelia’s opinion on our Purerehua’s: I think they are cool and creative because you can design your own and it tells other people about who you are and where you come from.
